Antibodies against Cytochromes c from Vertebrates

M. Reichlin 1, S. Fogel 1, A. Nisonoff 1, and E. Margoliash 1

From the 1 From the Department of Medicine, State University of New York at Buffalo and the Buffalo General Hospital, Buffalo, New York, and the Department of Microbiology, University of Illinois, Urbana, and the Biochemical Research Department, Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago, Illinois

Antibodies against tuna and horse cytochrome c have been obtained in rabbits and studied by a variety of techniques. These antibodies are ggrG-globulins and they cross-react with numerous other cytochromes c. The ferrous and ferric forms of the horse protein have different antigenic reactivities. By utilizing the many cytochromes c of known amino acid sequence, it is hoped eventually to derive a detailed map of the antigenic structure of the protein.
