The content of cytochrome c in metamorphosing pupae of the saturnid moth, Samia cynthia, rises rapidly from an undetectable level during the final 2 to 3 days of development, reaching the high adult concentration at emergence. This increase has been shown to result from synthesis de novo of the entire polypeptide chain.
