Transfer RNA (tRNA) is selectively partitioned between aqueous salt solutions and trichlorotrifluoroethane containing a water-insoluble quaternary amine. The extraction coefficients of individual tRNAs differ by several orders of magnitude. The pH, the concentration of salt in the aqueous phase, and the amine concentration in the organic phase markedly influence the extraction coefficients of the individual tRNAs.
