The synthesis of two polymers, polyglucosylglycerol phosphate and polygalactosylglycerol phosphate, from cytidine diphosphate glycerol and either uridine diphosphate d-glucose or uridine diphosphate d-galactose, catalyzed by an enzyme preparation from Bacillus licheniformis ATCC 9945, has been described. The synthesis proceeds by the stepwise addition of hexose and glycerol phosphate units.
Polymers of this structure have not been previously described. Evidence is presented that they are a component of the cell wall of B. licheniformis ATCC 9945 and may be linked to the mucopeptide in the cell wall.
