The bacteriolytic enzyme from the fungus, Chalaropsis species, has been purified and crystallized in high yield. The needle-shaped crystals were approximately 10 µ long. The crystalline protein exhibited a single band in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis at pH values of 9.3, 7.5, and 4.3. A single amino acid, threonine, was obtained by conventional NH2-terminal analysis. The specificity of the enzyme was confirmed to be an N,O-diacetylmuramidase.
