Chemical Studies of Histone Acetylation

THE OCCURRENCE OF egr-N-ACETYLLYSINE IN THE f2a1 HISTONE

E. L. Gershey 1, G. Vidali 1, and V. G. Allfrey 1

From the 1 From The Rockefeller University, New York, New York 10021

The f2a1 histone was isolated from calf thymus nuclei which had been incubated in the presence of sodium acetate-1-14C. Following digestion of the histone with trypsin and Pronase, the peptides and amino acids were fractionated by exclusion chromatography and ion exchange chromatography. All of the radioactivity of the 14C-acetate-labeled f2a1 histone was recovered in one peak which was identified as egr-N-acetyllysine.
