Azidothymidine (AZT) has been used for treatment of acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), but a recent concord trial showed that it
is ineffective for suppressing the development of AIDS. In this study, the
effects of AZT on three cell lines transformed by pCD12 plasmid (human
immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) promoter- chloramphenicol
acetyltransferase) were examined. Results showed that AZT has the potential
to activate the HIV-1 promoter.
