JBC: 2000 and Beyond
 |
INTRODUCTION |
The JBC has a new cover, which
represents much more than a simple change in appearance. The new cover
signals very substantive changes in JBC publishing that we feel will
better serve our authors and readers.
We are very proud of the fact that we, along with
Stanford's HighWire Press, launched JBC Online in 1995 and began the
revolution in online science publishing. This innovative development,
while important in itself, has also provided an opportunity for other advances, which we feel make the JBC the leader in publishing the most
important work in biochemistry and molecular biology. As we begin the
new millennium, we want to announce four important innovations for
2000, which we feel will help keep JBC at the forefront.

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS ON THE WEB |
Authors may now submit their
manuscripts utilizing the World Wide Web. This system has several
advantages. Most importantly, the review process is done entirely
electronically, allowing authors to receive a decision in a much
shorter time.
We strongly urge authors to use the Web to
submit their papers. Full instructions may be found by clicking on
"NOTICE" on the online JBC website at:
http://www.jbc.org or by going directly to the submission
site at http://www.jbc.org/submit.
The development of online submission coupled
with online publication utilizes the Web to seamlessly link authors and
readers of the Journal.

REDUCED CHARGES FOR COLOR GRAPHICS |
The cost of publishing color
figures has been significantly reduced. Rather than charging authors
the full cost of color reproduction, the JBC will provide a subsidy of
40% of average color costs. This subsidy allows us to reduce the cost
of color figures to $300. We hope the reduced charge will allow authors
to present their work in the most effective way and encourage authors
to consider the JBC when color figures are required by new technology and when they enhance the value of the manuscripts.
 |
SUPPLEMENTAL DATA FOR JBC ONLINE |
We have also added a new feature
for the JBC Online. We now publish supplemental material. This can
consist of large data sets, videos, complex sequence comparisons,
structures, and other material that might enhance a paper but cannot be
published easily in the printed version. All supplemental material
should be submitted with the initial manuscript and will be reviewed
for appropriateness. See the "Instructions to Authors" at the above
Web address for details on such submissions.
 |
ACCELERATED PUBLICATIONS |
We have tried in the past to
attract the most exciting research reports as Communications. We've
now changed the name to Accelerated Publications to more clearly
reflect our expectations that such reports be of unusually high impact
and broad interest. We will continue to use very stringent review
criteria for publication of Accelerated Publications and promise
authors rapid decisions on such submissions. We feel that this is a way
for authors to publish their best work rapidly.
We hope that with rapid electronic submission
and review, reduced cost for color graphics, the ability to include
supplemental data in JBC Online, and rapid Accelerated Publications
authors will consider submitting their most exciting papers to the JBC.
