We are pleased to announce another exciting innovation in JBC Publishing. In partnership with HighWire Press, our co-publisher of JBC Online, we have developed the capability to publish JBC papers as soon as they are accepted.

This publication system, called JBC Papers in Press, or JBC PIPs, is possible because of the development of our online manuscript submission and review system, OSRS. Manuscripts are submitted by authors electronically as PDF documents or are converted to PDF documents automatically. Currently, a remarkable 70% of submissions are electronic. The PDF version is then circulated via the Internet for review. Having all manuscripts in the Internet-compatible PDF format allows us to actually publish all papers as PDFs on the day they are accepted for publication. Following JBC PIP publication, papers will follow the current course of copyediting and will be published as usual in both JBC Online and JBC Print.

For authors, there are several important advantages of JBC PIP publication. First, JBC PIP publication will reduce the time to publication by about 8 weeks. Second, JBC PIP publications will be citable and will establish publication priority. Third, subsequent to JBC PIP publication, the JBC Online version of the paper will note the date the JBC PIP was published so that priority and proper referencing are unambiguous. Fourth, JBC PIPs will be searchable and fully integrated into the JBC Online site <www.jbc.org>. Fifth, JBC PIPs will be accessible through PubMed. Lastly, JBC PIPs will be freely accessible to anyone with access to the Internet so that scientists worldwide will have barrier-free access to your papers.

For readers, JBC PIPs provide rigorously peer-reviewed research both fast and free. The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, ASBMB, feels strongly that our mission as a Society publisher of the most cited journal is to provide barrier-free access to the important research results published in the JBC to everyone in the world. JBC PIPs accomplish that goal.

We are very excited that the combination of time saved with the online submission and review system, OSRS, and the time saved in JBC PIP publication will allow your work to reach the widest possible readership with unprecedented speed while maintaining the JBC rigorous peer review process. We hope you will consider sending your most important work to the JBC.

Click on the JBC Papers in Press icon on the JBC Online home page, www.jbc.org, to see the papers that have been accepted today.
