JBC Electronic Submission Required

In July 1999, we initiated the electronic submission of manuscripts for review. This system fully integrates the submission process with the online review process (see Editorial of December 24, 1999) and more recently with publication of all accepted papers on the day of acceptance as JBC Papers in Press (see Editorial of March 31, 2000). This Web-based system has created a seamless route from submission to publication. The process is fast and efficient and has reduced the average overall time from submission to publication from about 12 weeks to nearly 4 weeks for Regular Papers. In one remarkable case, a paper was submitted, reviewed, accepted without revision, and published all within 3 days!

When the submission system was initiated in July 1999, we expected that adoption by authors would be relatively slow. To our surprise and delight adoption has been anything but slow. In September 1999, 2 months after starting, 20% of all papers were submitted electronically. By February 2000, electronic submission was up to 65%, and by May 2000, only 9 months after starting, more than 80% of all manuscripts are being submitted electronically. Given this remarkable adoption rate and the universal use of digital composition of text and figures, we are now ready to standardize our online submission and review system for a more efficient operation and make electronic submission mandatory.

Beginning September 1, 2000, we will require electronic submission of all manuscripts. Authors can submit their manuscript text and graphics as a single PDF file or submit the text as a Microsoft Word file and graphics as TIFF or EPS files. In the latter case, we automatically convert the text and graphics to a PDF to circulate for review. In either case, the PDF version of the accepted paper is published as a JBC Papers in Press. Final submission for redaction will still require the Word text file and graphics as TIFF or EPS files (not PDF). Details and instructions can be found in the Instructions to Authors at the submission site, www.jbc.org/submit. Authors who are unable to submit electronically, under unusual circumstances, should contact the JBC office at jbc@asbmb.faseb.org.

The Editors are excited about the ease and speed of electronic submission and look forward to the participation of all authors in this publishing innovation.
