On the cover, insulin secretion is controlled by the activity of a number of ion channels including ATP-sensitive K+ channels (KATP), voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels (VDCC), and voltage-dependent K+ channels (Kv). We now know that Kv2.1 is a major contributor to repolarization of insulin-secreting cells, and antagonism of Kv2.1 enhances insulin secretion in a glucose-dependent manner (art by Wasim El-kholy). For details see the article by MacDonald et al., pages 44938-44945.
