On The Cover: The replication factor C (RFC) clamp loader assembles the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) clamp onto DNA. The illustration shows the RFC circular heteropentamer binding a primed DNA site. RFC also binds the ring-shaped PCNA sliding clamp (red) and opens it at one interface, enabling DNA to thread through PCNA. ATP binding is needed for these actions. ATP hydrolysis ejects the clamp loader from the PCNA clamp, leaving the clamp on DNA (not shown). The artwork was illustrated by Dr. Nina Y. Yao.
