TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR INSTITUTIONAL ONLINE SUBSCRIPTION

Subscription Access
  1. My institution has a subscription to JBC Online, but my patrons and/or I are not able to see the full text of articles. My patrons and/or I are prompted for a username and password. Why is this happening?
The most likely cause is that the IP address for your/their computer is not being recognized by our system. This failure is caused by one of three things:
    • Your institutional JBC Online subscription has not yet been activated.
    • The individual who "activated" the online subscription did not enter in all valid IP addresses for your institution.
    • The person who "activated" the online subscription did not realize that some subnets of your institution are routed through a proxy server.

    What should I do?
    1. Click here to see if your institutional subscription has been activated. (You will need your Customer Number. It was provided on the JBC Online Subscription Activation Letter -- which was e-mailed to the online subscription administrator at your institution.)
If your subscription is not active, click here to activate your subscription.
If your subscription is active, click here to view/modify the IP addresses registered for your institutional JBC Online subscription
    2. If you have tried the above suggestions and are still having troubles, please send us an e-mail to subscriptions@asbmb.org, so we can help you resolve the problem.
Note: If you are reading this and you are not the librarian or JBC Administrator, please contact your librarian, and inform he/she about your access troubles.

  2. Who from my institution can access JBC Online?
An institutional, online subscription allows unlimited simultaneous Internet access by only "authorized users" at one "site" location, and does not permit remote campuses, remote sites, consortia, or other forms of subscription sharing. If your institution has multiple sites, each site must purchase a separate subscription.
Definition of an "authorized user": An "authorized user" is defined as employees, faculty, staff, students, and consultants of the one subscribing location, whether on a permanent, temporary, or contract basis, who are permitted to access the Secure Network from within the one subscribing location [or from such other places where Authorized Users undertake their work for the one subscribing location (including but not limited to Authorized UsersĘ offices and homes)] and who have been issued by the one subscribing location with a password or other authentication.
Definition of a "site": A "site" is defined as an organizational unit, and may be academic or nonacademic. For organizations located in more than one city, each office is considered a different site, and requires a separate subscription. For organizations within the same city that are administered independently, each office is considered a different site, and requires a separate subscription. For example, each campus in the State University of New York system is a different site, each branch or office of GlaxoSmithkline is a different site, each institute of the National Institutes of Health is a different site.

  3. How is online access provided for our institutional JBC Online subscription?
Online access is provided by IP address. Once your order and payment is received and processed by ASBMB, your institutionĘs online subscription administrator will receive an e-mail message directing him/her to activate your institutionĘs online subscription. As a part of the activation process, you will be asked to provide valid IP addresses for the "authorized users" at the subscribing "site" only.

  4. How can I tell if my institution has access to JBC Online?
If your institution has a subscription, you/your patrons will be able to automatically (no username and password) access all content within JBC Online. This includes: Tables of Contents, Abstracts of articles, Full-Text HTML version of articles, Full-Text PDF version of articles, Medline and GenBank links, and future tables of contents.
Another way to tell if your institution has access to JBC Online is that you will see the following text near the top of the Web page: "Institution: [your institution name here]". This confirms you are signed in as part of the institutional subscription.

  5. My library subscribes to the print edition of JBC, and I can't get access to it online. Why?
Your print subscription to JBC does not include free online access. Access to JBC Online requires a separate subscription from the print edition. Click here to start a subscription to JBC Online.
