JBC Papers in Press is an exciting innovation in publishing. In partnership with HighWire Press, our co-publishers of JBC Online, we have developed the capability to publish JBC papers in manuscript form on the day they are accepted for publication. This publication mode will reduce the normal time to publication by about 8 weeks. JBC Papers in Press are published daily.

JBC Papers in Press will be citable and will establish publication priority. The official publication date appears below the title, e.g. JBC March 9, 2000, followed by the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) an automatically generated unique identifier for intellectual property in the digital environment (e.g.,10.1074/jbc.M908890199).

A sample citation for a JBC Papers in Press publication follows:

Qiao, D., Chen, W., Stratagoules, E., and Martinez, J. (March 10, 2000) J. Biol. Chem. 10.1074/jbc.M908890199

After a paper is published as a JBC Papers in Press, it proceeds through the current course of copy editing and publication, about 8 weeks later, in both JBC Online and JBC Print. The final version will bear the original publication date and will be cited with date, volume and page numbers but must also include the PIP publication date and DOI. The final, formal citation of a JBC paper that was first published as a JBC Papers in Press is:

Gerner, G., Frohwein, U., Gotzman, J., Bayer, E., Gelbman, D., Bursch, W., and Schulte-Herman, R. (2000) J. Biol. Chem. 275, 39018-39026. First Published on September 7, 2000; 10.1074/jbc.M006495200

After final publication, the JBC Papers in Press version will be removed from the active list and stored in an accessible, permanent archive.

JBC Papers in Press is functionally integrated into the JBC Online system. If a JBC Papers in Press publication meets search criteria, it will appear in the search results. They are also included in the Email notification of new papers which can be requested on a daily or weekly basis. JBC Papers in Press are also listed in and accessible through PubMed.

Access to JBC Papers in Press is free to anyone with Internet access. The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, ASBMB, feels strongly that our mission as a Society publisher of the most cited journal is to provide barrier free access to the important research results published in the JBC to everyone in the world. JBC Papers in Press accomplishes that goal.

JBC Papers in Press provides rigorously peer reviewed research fast and free. We hope this new feature serves our authors and readers well.
